According to Gartner Group, backup remains the single most expensive administrative task.
Additionally, it is predicted that world data is going to double in the next two years.
Does this mean that the cost of administering backup will increase proportionally as data
continues to grow?
Disk to disk backup was developed to address this increasing data growth and shortcomings
of traditional server to tape backup. Products ranging from Network Attached Storage (NAS)
or fiber or iSCSI connected SAN’s have helped some of the issues introduced above. The
problem however with D2D backup is that tape is still required to backup and store data
offsite. Tape backup is one of the main reasons that storage continues to remain such a
large expense and downtime statistics have proven that slow backup and slow restores not
only affect uptime, but also the bottom line. How do backup administrators eliminate the
problems associated with this necessary yet painful administrative task?
